I will never forget September 11th, 2001. It was a tragedy that took so many lives, and impacted the nation in a way that will never be forgotten.
Let me share my experience of that particular morning. I used to work as the director of IT for a health club in Westchester, New York. Because I lived on Long Island, I would normally do the commute in the early hours of the morning to bypass the traffic. The commute was over an hour each way, by way of the Throggs Neck Bridge to get off, and back onto the island.
On that particular morning, it just so happened to be the first day for our three year old son to attend preschool at Smithtown Christian School. I wanted to be a part of his first day, so I decided to wait until after we dropped him off to head to work.
We brought him to the school and had a great time meeting the teacher and getting a taste of what was in store for him. When we got back to the house, one of the staff girls who was watching our 18 month old daughter came out the front door of our house and told us that a plane had crashed into one of the twin towers. We ran inside and started watching the news. I knew I still had to go to work, but when I got in my car and started backing out of the driveway, my wife came out and stopped me, saying they had shut down all bridges and tunnels, so I wouldn’t be able to get off the island.
My wife and I immediately went back to the school to check on our son. We went to the outside of his classroom and saw him safe, with the other kids and made the decision to let him stay.
A good friend of mine used to work as a foreman for a construction crew that was working in the twin towers. He got hurt on the job just a couple of weeks before 911, and was still on disability that day. The person that replaced him, and all of his work buddies were killed. He spent years dealing with the fact that he would have been up in the towers with his crew, had it not been for his injury.
What was your experience like? Do you remember where you were when it happened? This is just one more example that shows you never know what could happen at any moment. If you haven’t thought about relationship with Jesus, I strongly recommend that you take the time to consider it. There is nothing more important. Nothing.
